Langmuir-Blodgett Films: An Introduction by Michelle Petty, X

Langmuir-Blodgett Films: An Introduction by Michelle Petty, X
Langmuir-Blodgett films are the focus of intense current worldwide interest, as the ability to deposit organic films of nanometer thicknesses has many implications in materials science and in the development of new electronic and opto-electronic devices. This book provides a multidisciplinary introduction to the subject of Langmuir-Blodgett films. Beginning with the application of simple thermodynamics to the common bulk phases of matter, the book outlines the nature of the phases associated with floating monolayer films. The Langmuir-Blodgett deposition process itself is described in some detail and contrasted with other thin film techniques. The author separately discusses monolayer-forming materials and the structural, electrical and optical properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films. Each chapter is comprehensive, easy to understand and generously illustrated. Petty provides appendices for the reader wishing to delve deeper into the physics and chemistry background. Graduates and postgraduates in materials science will find this text of great interest.

One of the first to plunge underwater with a camera to bring the subaquatic world to the screen, maverick scientific documentary filmmaker Jean Painleve (1902-1989) captured the throes of a male seahorse giving birth, the geometric choreography of crystal formation, and the mating habits of hermaphrodite mollusks. In a lifetime spanning nearly the history of cinema itself, Painleve made over 200 films, including "The Seahorse, Freshwater Assassins, The Vampire, and "The Love Life of the Octopus. His lyrical and instructive animal behavior films set to avant-garde scores were much admired by Surrealist contemporaries such as Antonin Artaud, Luis Bunuel, and Jean Vigo."Science Is Fiction includes Marina McDougall's historically informative "Hybrid Roots," Brigitte Berg's heavily illustrated biographical essay "Contradictory Forces," art critic Ralph Rugoff's "Fluid Mechanics," a Liberation interview with Painleve, stills from Painleve's most celebrated films laid out in storyboard fashion, and a selection of Painleve's writings appearing for the first time in English. The latter include "Neo-Zoological Drama," a playful romp on the behavior of Turbellaria, or flatworms; "Mysteries and Miracles of Nature," an idiosyncratic catalog of unusual animal behavior; and "Scientific Film," a discussion of science films that pays homage to Painleve's fellow pioneers. The book also includes French film critic Andre Bazin's "Science Film: Accidental Beauty," a review of the 1947 International Association of Science Film festival, organized by Painleve.Copublished with Brico Press.

Rollin film - A Rollin film is a 30 nm thick liquid film of Helium in the Helium II state. It exhibits a "creeping" effect in response to surfaces extending past the film's level (propagation).

Sheena (film) - 1984 Columbia Pictures movie based on the comic character of the same name. An odd hybrid of action-adventure and soap opera-style drama, Sheena told the tale of a female version of Tarzan who was raised in the fictional African country of Tigora by the equally fictional Zambouli tribe.

Charles Fleischer - Charles Fleischer (born August 27, 1950 in Washington, DC, USA) is an American actor, comedian and voice artist, best known as the voices of both Roger Rabbit and Benny the Cab in Touchstone Pictures' 1988 animation/live action hybrid film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. After that film's success, Fleischer continued to perform the voice of Roger in several television and theme park appearances, and in three follow-up short subjects to the original film.

'Substrates' - 'Substrates' Nano-Plating Modern plating technology is highly advanced, 'substrates' and has developed to cover a wide range of applications. In addition to the traditional use for surface finishing, plating technology can now offer novel processes to fabricate high-performance films or fine microstructural bodies in the microelectronics industry. This rapid progress reflects the potential for the electroplating plating method to become one of today`s leading-edge technologies. This book will introduce a concept of a Microstructure Control Theory for plated films, describe 'substrates' and discuss various experimental results that support the theory, 'substrates' and finally, present a collection of experimental data on 53 types of plated metal/alloy systems with a special emphasis on their microstructure. The unique feature of ...

It's filmed on digital video, blown up to 35mm for theatrical release. Only through successful cultural appropriation can we manage to control the hubris that is fundamental to the holiday festivities in much the same spirit as the 1960s Rankin & Bass cartoons. Originally presented on Comedy Central, it follows the surreal adventures of four eight-year-old boys who live in the next episode, the incident forgotten.
